RETURN TO BOSNIA

Steve deployed to Bosnia with the 1-8 Cav "Mustangs" in September 1998. Part of SFOR, the NATO 'Stabilization Force' that monitored the peace brokered by the Dayton Accords, his platoon conducted presence patrols, performed weapons inspections and delivered humanitarian assitance in the northeastern corner of Bosnia and Hercegovina, centered around the disputed city of Brcko. Ten years later, Steve decided to go back to Bosnia. We started in Sarajevo and took a car through the mountains north to Brcko, stopping at a couple of sites within Steve's area of operations. Armed with some old photos, a halting command of about 4 conversational phrases in the local dialect, and an affinity for Jadro cakes (the Bosnian Little Debbie) we set out to assess the post-conflict development of Bosnia ten years on. And sample lots of local beer. Our impressions were uniformly favorable, on both counts.
